Oh To Be... That Gal!

There is a “gal”….and she is someone I aspire to be like.

You can read about her in Psalm 1:3.

“That person (I prefer to call her…That Gal) is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither-Whatever they do prospers.”

That Gal…she has her roots planted in a water source that never runs dry. Her life bears fruit in every season and she has enough stamina that  allows her to stay the course. Others look at her and see one who is prospering, not struggling just to get by. The envy of many; her secret lies beneath the surface, in what (or should I say, in WHO) she has chosen to be rooted/anchored into.

The health of a tree is dependent upon its root system. Roots bring nourishment to every branch and they bring stability when there are forces that attempt to uproot the tree. Sure, we enjoy the beauty of lush green leaves, or textured tree trunks that are dark with dew and having screen savers celebrating beautiful fall foliage. However…
…….it is the root system that determines the health of the tree.
Oh To Be….That Gal

She has pushed her roots down deep into the presence of God, recognizing that HE is the source of all she needs.

In Isaiah 58:11, we read “The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail.”

That gal…her roots are not anchored in a person, or in a church or even in her own abilities. She is rooted in God Himself.
How exactly….does she do it?

I Believe the answers lie in verses 1 and 2.

“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord and who meditates on His law day and night.”

That Gal rooted herself in God when she made a decision to STOP doing three things that hindered healthy spiritual growth:
       * She does not walk in step with the wicked. To walk in step means to walk in agreement. She has paid attention to what she has chosen to believe and if her thoughts/belief systems are contrary to the Word of God, she has rejected them.

Is there a thought pattern that you consistently have that discourages you, accuses you or produces desires to act in a way that you just know are not in agreement with what God would have you do? Take that unhealthy thought and reject it. Replace it with the Truth that comes from the Word.

* She does not stand in the way that sinners take.  You anchor your roots in the presence of God when you stop participating in behaviors that are not pleasing to the Lord.

Take an honest inventory of your choices, how you walk. Ask the Lord if there is something that you are doing that needs to stop. I have found that I can usually answer this question even before I am done asking it!

*She does not sit in the company of mockers.   Are there ways that I need to stop talking? Proverbs 18:21 states that “the tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit.”

If I had to eat every word I spoke, how would it taste? Take note in what you are declaring over your life when you speak out. Are your words true? Are their life-breathing?

That Gal rooted herself in God when she started DOING something significant.

*She meditates on the law of the Lord day and night.   To meditate means to “chew” on the Word of God in the same fashion that a cow chews its cud….over and over and over again. . She spends incredible amounts of time in His Word: memorizing, reflecting, praying, studying, journaling. She is constantly asking God to reveal to her a fresh understanding and application for her life….and He answers her.

Meditation leads to Revelation which leads to Transformation.

When you really meditate on the the Word, the Lord brings a fresh revelation to you that is applicable for growing right where you are. This fresh revelation leads to a transformation in your life. You grow more like Jesus…. and growth is exciting! Growth in Him causes you to delight in His Word!

Oh To Be….That Gal!

*Rooted in the presence of God…nourished and stable
*Saying NO to thoughts/behaviors/speech that hinders healthy growth
*Saying YES to meditating on His Word and obeying

God….I Am…That Gal!

Identity. Freedom. Purpose.
It’s in Christ that we find out who we are and what we are living for.
